We met onboard the M/V Anastasis in 2005 while the ship was in Liberia - Laura was a Nurse on the hospital ward and Drew was a Deck Hand. We were both short-term volunteers. We went home and got married in December 2006. We returned to the Anastasis as short-term volunteers, transferring to the Africa Mercy when the Anastasis was retired in 2007, this time working in Ghana and Liberia. At the end of 2007 we decided that we would become long-term volunteers with Mercy Ships and went to the head office in Texas, USA to do the Gateway course - a training program needed for people making a long-term commitment. We returned to the ship in February 2008 to start a 2 year commitment. We started out in Liberia again and are now in Benin, West Africa.

Drew now works as the Assistant Bosun in the deck department. This means a variety of work, including: co-ordinating unloading the containers full of supplies sent to run the hospital and feed the hungry staff; overseeing the loading, treating and testing of the ship's water supply; and also helping the Bosun lead all the other deck hands in maintenance of the ship.

Laura works as one of the two Assistant Ward Managers. This involves: the day to day running of the Ortho, General, VVF and Plastics ward; overseeing and training the nurses; and being involved in some of the management decisions that affect the ward currently and in the future.

We are not sure what will happen at the end of our commitment in January next year but are trusting God to lead our next steps. We enjoy the work we do with Mercy Ships and can see the difference the ship is making to the lives of people in West Africa. It is a privilege to be involved with this work.
